The Seward Johnson Sculptures Are Back in the Wildwoods!

For a third summer in a row, the very popular Seward Johnson sculptures are back all around the Wildwoods.

These captivating sculptures have become a beloved feature, delighting both residents and tourists with their charm and realism.

Seward Johnson sculptures are life-sized and often larger-than-life bronze statues created by American artist John Seward Johnson II.

Known for their incredible detail and lifelike quality, these sculptures capture everyday moments with remarkable accuracy.

Seward Johnson was an American artist and sculptor, born into the wealthy Johnson & Johnson family.

Despite his privileged background, he pursued a career in the arts, initially studying painting before shifting his focus to sculpture.

Johnson’s works are renowned for their striking realism and their ability to capture everyday moments in intricate detail.

His sculptures frequently depict people engaged in various activities, such as reading, sitting on a bench, or taking photographs, making them highly relatable and approachable for the public.

The sculptures are so realistic that there have been times when visitors to the island have called the police, thinking someone was actually sleeping on a bench. (We are not joking–it has happened!)

Over the years, the island has seen many different kinds of Johnson’s sculptures.

In 2022, the Wildwood Video Archive took a tour around the island to visit all of them. You can check them out in the video at the bottom of this article.

Last year, we saw a painter, Albert Einstein, a man sleeping on a bench, and many more. These sculptures are spread throughout the entire island.

In a week or two, a map will be published to showcase the exact location of each of the sculptures, making it easier for visitors to find and enjoy them.

The best way to explore them is by jumping on a bike and biking from location to location. This allows you to take in the beautiful scenery of the Wildwoods while enjoying the art.

Placing these sculptures in Wildwood enriches the city’s cultural landscape, providing both residents and tourists with memorable, interactive art experiences that complement the area’s recreational and scenic attractions.

The Seward Johnson sculptures not only beautify public spaces but also invite people to pause, reflect, and engage with art in a tangible way.

This annual display continues to enhance the vibrant atmosphere of the Wildwoods, making it a must-see attraction each summer.
