North Wildwood Makes Emergency Boardwalk Repairs

The Wildwood Boardwalk has been undergoing a series of transformations in recent years, with much of the work concentrated on the Wildwood side of the nearly two-mile-long boardwalk.

This extensive reconstruction effort, now entering its sixth phase, aims to complete the Wildwood portion of the boardwalk by late spring 2026.

This timeline, however, does not account for the current project to extend the boardwalk’s width by 14 feet in certain areas.

Many forget that the boardwalk runs through two different cities, with North Wildwood covering the section from 16th Street to 26th Street.

In February 2024, the city revealed plans to move forward with a major reconstruction project.

Phase 1, focusing on the northern end of the boardwalk between 16th and 18th Avenues, was expected to begin in fall 2024. The estimated cost for this phase was $3.5 million.

The Wildwood Video Archive made a video about those original plans, which you can find at the bottom of this article.

The full reconstruction of the North Wildwood boardwalk is anticipated to cost approximately $34 million.

To help offset these expenses, the city secured grant awards from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the NJ Urban Enterprise Zone.

Additionally, the city applied for the PROTECT Grant with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Boardwalk Preservation Fund with the NJ Department of Community Affairs.

The start dates for these projects depend on when these applications are approved.

While waiting for funding, the city identified sections of the boardwalk in need of repairs and addressed them as necessary.

Fast forward to 2025, and the North Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction project has yet to begin. However, on December 3rd, city hall approved resolution “297-24,” authorizing emergency boardwalk repairs.

These repairs cover various issues under the North Wildwood section of the boardwalk, ranging from fixing loose boards to repairing structural supports.

To clarify, the boardwalk itself is safe, but since the major project could take a year to get underway, addressing minor issues now will prevent potential problems later.

The WVA spoke to city hall regarding the future of the boardwalk reconstruction, and at this time, no start date has been set.
