Last summer, officials revealed that an extension was in the works after submitting an application under the Coastal Area Facility Review Act (CAFRA).
With the state’s approval granted last month, construction is now well underway.
If you’ve ever been on the Wildwood Boardwalk on a busy summer night—especially on a Friday just before the fireworks—you’ve probably noticed just how packed it can get, particularly in the area just south of Schellenger Avenue.
While the boardwalk is known for its wide, open feel, many don’t realize that its width actually varies depending on the section.
The northern portion, stretching from North Wildwood into Schellenger Avenue, is about 60 feet wide, offering plenty of space for pedestrians, tramcars, and vendors.

However, as you move south toward the Wildwoods Convention Center, the boardwalk narrows significantly to around 44 feet, creating bottlenecks during peak times.
To address this issue, the city submitted a proposal to widen the entire stretch from Schellenger Avenue to the Convention Center. The goal is to create a more uniform width across the boardwalk, easing congestion and making it easier for visitors to move freely, even on the busiest nights.
With CAFRA’s approval secured, the city is now moving forward with the project. While the full expansion plan was given the green light, crews only have time to complete a portion of the work before the next summer season.
The first phase of construction focuses on the section between Roberts Avenue and Montgomery Avenue, with future phases expected to continue the work further south.
Construction officially began just a few weeks ago, and progress has been moving quickly.
Crews have already started preparing the foundation for the wider boardwalk, and if things continue at this pace, visitors may notice a major difference by the time the summer crowds return. (most likely around May 9th).
With this expansion, the Wildwood Boardwalk will not only maintain its reputation as one of the most iconic boardwalks on the East Coast but will also become even more accommodating for the millions of visitors who walk its planks each year.
