Launching Memorial Day Weekend, Down the Shore Steamers is offering ready-to-cook, family-style seafood steam pots and meals that bring the taste of a beachside seafood feast—without the mess or stress of cooking.

Located at 2501 New Jersey Avenue (25th and New Jersey Ave), this used to be the old home of The Shore Eat and Shoobies

We caught up with founder Holly Stapleton, who shared the backstory of how the concept was born—right from a beach chair.

Down the Shore Steamers didn’t start in a commercial kitchen or on a whiteboard—it started with Holly sitting on the beach with her kids, sun-soaked and hungry.

“ I sat on the beach two years ago soaking in the sun, watching my kids play and loving all the beach had to offer. When we go to the beach we are there all day! As I sat there, I was struggling on what to feed my family for dinner. Honestly, spending $80 for pizza and fries again was torture. In the same sense getting my tired kids ready to go out to eat and spending a small fortune also sounded unnecessarily painful.”

With limited options in her motel kitchenette and the seafood options around town either pricey or not quite what she was craving (“I wanted real crab cakes, not filler or imperial style”), Holly had a moment of clarity: “I seriously contemplated opening a place just to sell crab cakes.”

Fast forward two years and that beachside idea has snowballed into Down the Shore Steamers, a takeout-style seafood shop featuring a variety of ready-to-cook steam pots, sandwiches, fresh salads, and yes—handcrafted crab cakes that Holly spent hours and hours perfecting.

While the crab cakes were the original inspiration, the menu has grown to offer flexible, easy meals that fit any beachgoer’s schedule.

The menu includes (but not limited to):

  • Family-style steam pots featuring high-quality seafood
  • Sandwiches like mahi, crab cake, crabby grilled cheese, tuna, and even chicken for non-seafood lovers
  • Fresh salads with protein-packed toppings
  • A pasta pot for those craving something different
  • Take-and-bake crab cakes (completely gluten free)

Holly emphasizes that quality seafood is at the heart of it all. “I’ve spent a lot of time with our seafood distributor choosing the best tasting, high-quality seafood. I truly believe it makes a huge difference.”

The shop will be seasonal, running through October, with potential plans for expanded offerings depending on how the season goes. Weekly specials are already in the works to keep the menu exciting for returning customers.

At its core, Down the Shore Steamers is about removing stress from mealtime and giving families more quality time together.

“I hope to bring flexibility and options for everyone. I hope to make your vacation a little less stressful. Don’t worry about dinner tonight and spend more time together as a family.”

And if you’ve got dietary needs or special requests? Just ask. “I am always willing to accommodate if I can,” says Holly.

Down the Shore Steamers will host their grand opening on Saturday May 24th.
