Grassy Sound Fishing Pier To Reopen After Three Years
For the past six months, the Wildwood Video Archive has been closely following the construction progress at the old Grassy Sound Fishing Pier — and now, the work is officially complete.
After being closed to the public for nearly three years, one of Cape May County’s best-kept not-so-secret fishing spots is finally back in action.

Grassy Sound Fishing Pier To Reopen After Three Years
Believe it or not, the Grassy Sound Fishing Pier wasn’t always just a fishing pier. It actually sits on the remnants of the old North Wildwood Boulevard bridge.
If you’ve been coming to the shore for years, you might remember driving over that rickety bridge long before the newer, taller concrete one was built a few decades ago.
The pier, originally constructed atop the remnants of the Bridge, started showing structural concerns which forced it to close.
On Friday, June 13 at 10 a.m., Cape May County officials — including County Commission Director Len Desiderio and the full Board of County Commissioners — will join Middle Township Mayor Chris Leusner and other local leaders for a celebratory ribbon-cutting to mark the grand reopening.
In the Fall of the County started a major rehab project totaling just under $3 million.
The comprehensive facelift didn’t just patch things up — it transformed the entire experience.
From a brand-new bulkhead and improved lighting to ADA-compliant access and upgraded parking, the pier is now safer, more accessible, and more inviting than ever before.

The project was done in record time has many sections of the fishing pier was built elsewhere before being shipped over and slipped in to place.
“We are excited to see the reopening of the Grassy Sound Pier as we head into the summer season,” said Commissioner Director Desiderio in a press release. “The Board of Commissioners has been steadfast in our support of great projects that enhance the public’s access to our waterways and support opportunities for affordable, outdoor recreation for residents and visitors alike.”
The pier is still county-owned, but thanks to a shared services agreement, Middle Township will handle the day-to-day upkeep of the site — just as it has since 2007 under a lease arrangement.
This means that it is free to go fishing on the pier but if you need gear, you can stop by Grassy Sound Marina to get your tackle, bait and more.
So whether you’re a seasoned fisher or just want to take in the salty air, this is one ribbon-cutting worth celebrating.
Grab your bait and tackle — Grassy Sound is open once again.
