Construction Underway on North Wildwood’s New ADA-Accessible Boardwalk and Beach Access

Construction Underway on North Wildwood’s New ADA-Accessible Boardwalk and Beach Access

If you’ve taken a stroll along the North Wildwood Boardwalk this off-season, you may have noticed construction at 21st Avenue and wondered what’s happening.

While some might assume this is part of the larger Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction Project, this particular work is a separate initiative aimed at improving accessibility.

Back in August, we first reported on plans for this project. However, with a recent influx of questions, we wanted to provide an update.

The construction currently underway focuses on building a new ADA-compliant boardwalk and beach access ramp just north of Seaport Pier.

This project is designed to enhance accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges, ensuring that everyone can fully enjoy North Wildwood’s beachfront.

The improvements are made possible in part by a $400,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Division of Community Resources, through the New Jersey Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.

This initiative, backed by federal funding from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, highlights North Wildwood’s commitment to modernization and inclusivity.

The project includes new ADA-compliant access points to the boardwalk and beach, site clearing and demolition to prepare for construction, and installation of timber hardwood piles, framing, decking, and aluminum railings for enhanced safety and support.

These upgrades will provide safer, more convenient access for those with mobility challenges, ultimately enhancing the experience for all visitors.

In addition to the ADA access project, the city is also replacing a stormwater pipe between 20th and 21st Avenues to improve drainage in the area.

Many may be wondering when will the North Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction Project start. While that was supposed to happen this past fall, at this time we do not have a timeframe. It is possible that it could happen in the fall but we won’t know until the city officially announces it.

Phase 6 of the Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction Project is set to be completed by the first week of May.

If grant funding remains available, the city hopes to move forward with Phase 7, which would span from Burk Avenue to Cresse Avenue—an eight-block stretch, making it the largest phase yet.

It’s unclear whether this section will be divided into two parts, as that decision will largely depend on the amount of grant money secured.

We’ll continue tracking the progress of this project and will feature updates in our upcoming Wildwoods Construction Update video.

Stay tuned for more details as work moves forward!
