DRBA Announces Major Airport Upgrades at Cape May, ILG, and More

The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) is rolling out a series of major airport improvements at Wilmington (ILG), Millville (MIV), Cape May (WWD), and Delaware Air Park (33N).

With growing passenger traffic and increasing demand for airport services, these upgrades aim to modernize facilities, improve efficiency, and expand capacity.

Many of the projects are backed by significant Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funding.

Bigger Passenger Terminal at ILG

If you’ve been to Wilmington Airport lately, you know it’s getting busier. To keep up, the DRBA is expanding the passenger hold room.

This $1.93 million project (plus another $900,000 in later years) will give travelers more space to relax before their flights.

The FAA is pitching in $6.3 million to help make it happen.

Hangar 1 Gets a Much-Needed Makeover

Located inside the Delaware Air National Guard’s secured area, Hangar 1 has been overdue for an upgrade.

The DRBA is putting $1.8 million into renovations in 2025, with an extra $2 million down the line.

Expect improved storage space and better efficiency for maintenance crews. The FAA is contributing $400,000 toward the project.

New Run-Up Pad at ILG

A previous phase of airport improvements temporarily removed the run-up pad, but now a brand-new one is in the works.

The new location will be more efficient, with $504,000 coming from the DRBA and a massive $9.1 million from the FAA.

De-Icing Pad Expansion

With increased flights, ILG needs better de-icing facilities. A new de-icing pad is planned, with the DRBA putting in $18,000 in 2025 and another $1.66 million later.

The FAA is stepping in with $6.9 million to help cover costs.

More Parking for Passengers

ILG’s commercial service is growing, which means more people need a place to park.

The DRBA is planning a major parking expansion with $50,000 allocated for design in 2025 and $5.3 million in later years for construction.

Taxiway Repairs at Millville Airport (MIV)

Millville’s Taxiways A, C, and G are getting a full rehab after a Pavement Management Study flagged them for repairs.

The plan includes new pavement, better lighting, new signage, and drainage fixes. The DRBA is putting in $245,000 in 2025 and another $613,000 in later years, while the FAA is backing the project with $7.46 million.

Cape May Airport Getting a New Light Industrial Building

Cape May Airport (WWD) is seeing more business interest, and the DRBA has already built and leased two industrial buildings.

Now, they’re adding a third one to accommodate demand. The new facility is expected to cost $1.54 million in 2025.

More Hangars Coming to Delaware Air Park (33N)

Demand for hangar space at Delaware Air Park is climbing, so the DRBA is constructing additional box hangars.

This $1.05 million project is getting a big boost from the FAA, which is contributing $844,000.

Apron Expansion at 33N

With recent runway relocation and facility growth, apron space at 33N is expected to see more use.

The DRBA is investing $224,000 in 2025 to expand the apron, and the FAA is chipping in an impressive $2.02 million.

These projects are just part of the DRBA’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand airport operations in the region.

With major FAA funding backing many of the improvements, expect to see some significant changes in the coming years.
