Cape May’s beloved Exit Zero Filling Station, located at 110 Sunset Boulevard, is officially up for sale, marking the end of an era for fans of its eclectic mix of Thai, Indian, and American cuisine.

The news was first speculated online before later being confirmed by the restaurant’s owner, Jack Wright in this week’s edition of Exit Zero.

In a candid and heartfelt message, Wright acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the decision, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support and kind words from the community. “I was surprised to read so many lovely, positive words. Those far outnumbered the thoughtless gossips,” he said.

After a decade in the restaurant industry, Wright admitted it was time to turn the page. “Suffice to say that, 10 years after dipping my toes into the treacherous waters of the restaurant business, I am ready to turn the page,” he stated.

While not delving into all the details behind the decision, he noted that his past experiences—including operating three restaurants at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal—played a role.

“Did my experience of opening three restaurants at the Cape May-Lewes ferry terminal influence the decision? Oh, yes it did, but, to quote the great Forrest Gump, that’s all I have to say about that.”

The sale of the Exit Zero Filling Station does not impact the publication of Wright’s long-running magazine, Exit Zero, which has been a staple for 23 years. (It has become of our favorite things to read around town)

Nor will it affect the annual Burns Supper, which has found a new home at the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center. “We’re into our 23rd year and I plan on continuing to pump it out as long as the blood still pumps in my veins,” Wright reassured his readers.

As for what’s next, the property has already drawn significant interest, given its prime location in one of America’s most popular seaside towns.

Though nothing is finalized yet, Wright has promised to keep the public updated via social media and future columns. “There are lots of people interested, as you would expect of a prime lot in one of America’s coolest seaside towns (and just three blocks from the beach!), but nothing firm yet. Naturally, I’ll keep you in the loop.”

Speaking exclusively to the Wildwood Video Archive, Wright further clarified, “It’s the end of food for THIS location. Will we do something else in the future somewhere else? I don’t know yet is the truthful answer. For now, we will focus on the publishing side of the business—our weekly mag and the annual Cool Cape May book—and will continue to sell cool EZ merchandise on our website.”

What would you like to take its place?

Whether the next owner continues the tradition or brings something entirely new remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Exit Zero Filling Station has left a lasting mark on Cape May’s dining scene.
