Has Wildwood’s Hurricane Club Sold?

Over the weekend, the Wildwood Video Archive received numerous inquiries about the status of the Hurricane Club.

Located at 218 E. Schellenger Avenue in Wildwood, this club has been a fixture on the island for decades.

Built in 1965 during the Doo Wop boom, it was surrounded by iconic establishments such as the Stardust Night Club, the Fairview Night Club, and Neil’s Steakhouse.

A ton of famous performers have played at the Hurricane including Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Drifters and the Coasters to just name a few.

In the past five years, the entire area around the Hurricane Club has undergone significant transformation.

Many neighboring buildings have been demolished to make way for new hotels, parking lots, and restaurants.

This, coupled with the “For Sale” sign on the club’s main marquee, has led to widespread speculation about the club’s fate.

To address these questions, we decided to investigate.

The Hurricane Club was recently listed for sale by Shore Points Realty, but the main listing has since been removed. The original listing described the property as follows:

“Bar with C Liquor License, approximately 5,100 square feet, with stage, operational bar, and seating for 470 patrons. Ceiling heights are approximately 16-20 ft. There are men’s and women’s bathrooms, a changing room, office, and walk-in box. Furniture, fixtures, and equipment are included, except for personal items. The property has a current sprinkler and fire system. Property is being sold AS IS.”

The asking price was $895,000. With the listing now offline, we can only speculate about the current status. However, there is another critical detail to consider: the C Liquor License.

In New Jersey, the sale of a liquor license must be published in public notices. Two weeks ago, a notice regarding the Hurricane Bikini Club’s liquor license was posted.

According to the public notice, the retail consumption license number 0514-33-045-003 (Hurricane) has been transferred to two new individuals.

One of them owns Santorini at 517 West Rio Grande Ave and Venezia at 4801 Pacific Avenue. They are also the proprietors of the popular Tacodelphia taqueria in Center City Philadelphia.

This transfer doesn’t necessarily indicate that they have purchased the building.

Each city has a limited number of liquor licenses available, and acquiring one often requires finding an existing license.

In this case, the Hurricane Club’s liquor license was available for transfer. It could be possible that this license could end up in a different restaurant on the island.

According to the local MLS, the property has been pending sale for $895,000 since March 21st.

The finalization of the sale will not be confirmed until it is publicly announced.

A review of public records from February 2024 shows no completed transfers at this address.
