I-95 Bridge Rebuild Update

In a remarkable turn of events, the demolition of the collapsed section of the I-95 bridge in Northeast Philadelphia is set to be completed ahead of schedule, according to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Initially estimated to take a week or longer, the demolition will now be finished in just four days, signaling a significant milestone in the process of rebuilding the vital highway.

The urgency to demolish the southbound side of the bridge arose after it was discovered that it had been compromised in the collapse of the northbound side.

Governor Shapiro expressed his commitment to completing the reconstruction process “as quickly as possible,” although he refrained from providing a definitive timeline. Recognizing the challenges faced by the public due to the closure, he assured them that every effort was being made to expedite the project. The reconstruction of the collapsed portion of I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia will be undertaken by Buckley & Co., a Philadelphia firm known for its expertise in such endeavors.

Once the damaged portion is demolished, crews will proceed to backfill the area with Pennsylvania-made recycled glass aggregate. To ensure the swift transport of this material, the Pennsylvania State Police will provide escorts for trucks carrying the fill from Delaware County to the site.

The use of recycled glass aggregate not only aids in expediting the project but also safeguards the underlying infrastructure, such as aging sewer lines, as it weighs significantly less than regular soil.

PennDot Secretary Mike Carroll explained that after the backfill is added, the surface level of I-95 will be paved, and three center lanes in each direction will be reopened to motorists. Subsequently, new lanes will be constructed alongside the existing ones, and the traffic will be shifted to the newly completed structure. This transitional phase will allow crews to excavate the material constituting the fill and repurpose it for another project.

The reconstruction of the center part of the bridge will be completed afterward, culminating with the reopening of the Cottman Avenue exit ramp.

Remarkably, contractors are utilizing 15,000 cubic yards of foamed glass aggregate, a lightweight material made from recycled glass, to fill the damaged portion of the Cottman Avenue exit ramp. This innovative choice not only ensures the stability of the ramp but also provides protection to the underlying sewer lines. The use of this material highlights a commitment to sustainable solutions in infrastructure projects.

To keep the public informed and engaged, Governor Shapiro announced that the reconstruction process will be live-streamed. This transparent approach aims to provide Pennsylvanians with a sense of timing as progress unfolds. The governor emphasized the collective effort involved in this endeavor, stating, “This is our championship. This is a team sport. We’re gonna work together to show what the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can do.”

While challenges still lie ahead, the collaboration between engineers, construction workers, and state officials underscores the resilience of the community and their unwavering commitment to restoring this vital transportation artery.

Governor Shapiro’s commitment to expeditious and safe completion serves as a testament to the power of effective governance. The live stream of the reconstruction process will further enable the public to witness the progress firsthand, fostering transparency and instilling confidence in the government’s efforts.

In the face of adversity, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania stands united, determined to overcome the challenges and rebuild a stronger, safer I-95 for the benefit of all.
