New $350 Million Bridge Project Coming to Cape May County
Cape May County is moving forward with what may become the largest construction project in its history.
During the July 8 County Commission meeting, officials unveiled a detailed 3D video rendering of the plan to replace the aging Middle Thorofare Bridge.
The Wildwood Video Archive filmed an entire video breaking down the new bridge. You can scroll down to the bottom of the article to watch it.
Many don’t know this bridge by it’s real but rather the bridge you use going to Cape May as you leave the Diamond Beach (Lower Township) / Wildwood Crest.
The current bridge is 86 years old, and over the past few years we have been seen many issues with it including last summer. The bridge at the time had a total failure of the drive shaft motor used to open the bridge on demand, meaning that it could only open using a backup motor.
Luckily that was fixed thanks and part to another bridge having some spare parts but it really illustrated the need to have it replaced.
Currently the bridge opens for commercial fishing boats and sailboats, but the new design will feature a fixed span with 80 feet of clearance.

This will be more than enough space for local vessels, which are typically under 65 feet tall.
The project will also improve 2.7 miles of roadway and includes the full replacement of two nearby low-level bridges: the Mill Creek Bridge and the Upper Thorofare Bridge. These are the bridges you would drive over after taking the bridge East heading West. (think Port, and the one by the fisheries.
Together, these upgrades aim to improve traffic flow, increase storm protection, and enhance long-term safety for drivers.

Officials estimate that the entire project will take approximately eight years to complete.
While it is a long-term effort, the benefits are expected to be significant.
The new fixed span bridge will reduce traffic delays caused by bridge openings and better accommodate the region’s growing summer tourism and commercial activity.
No official start date has been set, but the release of the 3D video rendering marks a key step forward.
Public input will continue to be a part of the planning process as the project moves through final design and permitting phases.
This new bridge and roadway system will be a major investment in Cape May County’s future.
Once completed, it will improve access between the barrier islands and the mainland, support the local economy, and provide a safer, more efficient route for residents and visitors alike.
Stay tuned for updates as Cape May County begins preparing for what could be its most ambitious infrastructure project to date.
