New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Comments on Drones
After signing the Freedom to Read Act into law yesterday, Governor Phil Murphy fielded a few questions from reporters.
Among them, one topic stood out: the mysterious drones seen zipping through New Jersey’s skies.
These aren’t your run-of-the-mill drones you’d pick up at a store. Witnesses describe them as large, fast, and agile, capable of sharp turns and disappearing from sight in an instant.
Understandably, the sightings have raised eyebrows and sparked concerns across the Garden State.
“I don’t blame people for being frustrated,” Murphy said when asked about the drones. He assured residents that New Jersey is working hand-in-hand with federal agencies to get to the bottom of it.
The governor emphasized a critical point: “Most importantly, we see no evidence—and this includes input from Homeland Security, the FBI, the Secret Service, our state police, and other authorities—that these drones pose a public safety risk. That’s the key message I want to share upfront.”
Still, Murphy acknowledged that the situation is far from resolved. “It’s really frustrating that we don’t have more answers as to where they’re coming from and why they’re doing what they’re doing,” he admitted.

Murphy revealed that he’s been in close contact with top leaders in Washington, including conversations with Homeland Security and the White House. “I was on with the White House and Homeland Security leadership, literally at the very top, pretty much all day yesterday. I’m hoping we’ll get answers sooner rather than later.”
For now, the state is urging residents to report any sightings to local law enforcement or the FBI.
The governor highlighted the importance of safeguarding sensitive locations like military bases, utility plants, and other critical infrastructure.
“These drones are very sophisticated. The minute you get eyes on them, they go dark,” Murphy said. “We’re taking this deadly seriously, especially given the sensitive targets they’ve been near. While we’ve had good cooperation from federal agencies, we need more answers, and that was my plea.”
While investigations continue, the governor’s message to New Jerseyans is clear: stay vigilant, report any unusual activity, and trust that the state is working tirelessly to unravel the mystery.
Where haven’t these mysterious drones been spotted? Most counties in South Jersey have yet to see them hovering in their skies. This includes Cape May, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland, and Gloucester counties.
In the meantime, residents can only wait and watch the skies, hoping the answers arrive as swiftly as the drones disappear.
