Next Phases of Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction Project – Fall 2023
The Wildwood Boardwalk has long been an iconic destination for residents and tourists alike.
With its stunning views, the boardwalk holds a special place in the hearts of many. However, as the years have passed, the boardwalk has faced wear and tear, prompting the need for a comprehensive rehabilitation project.
Over the past few years, the city of Wildwood has been reconstructing parts of the Wildwood Boardwalk. Phase 1 in 2021 consisted of the streets from Oak to Maple Avenues and Phase 2, which finished this year, knocked out from Maple to 26th Street.
Details on the next few phases, II, IV, and V, have been released via a public notice looking for contractors.
Let’s go over what we know.
The Wildwood Municipal Clerk has issued a “Notice to Bidders” inviting construction companies and contractors to submit their sealed proposals for the forthcoming project.
The opening and public reading of these proposals are scheduled to take place at the Commissioners Meeting Room on the Second Floor of City Hall on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
This highly anticipated phase encompasses the rehabilitation of the boardwalk from Oak Avenue to Schellenger Avenue (Phase III) and the complete replacement of the Cedar Avenue Connector section of the boardwalk running East to West (Phase IV). Additionally, it includes alternate bid items that entail boardwalk rehabilitation per block heading south from Schellenger Avenue to Spicer Avenue (Phase V).

The Scope of work for Phase III, Oak Avenue to Schellenger Avenue, is a meticulous process that involves the careful removal of the existing IPE decking to expose the glulam framing beneath. The glulam stringers and girders exhibit wood rot and thus require timber repairs.
After these repairs and improvements, the existing IPE decking is to be reinstated, preserving the authentic charm of the Wildwood Boardwalk while enhancing its structural integrity.
This is the very same process that Phases I and II underwent.
Phase IV, the Cedar Avenue Boardwalk, presents an even more comprehensive undertaking.
The existing boardwalk and substructure will undergo complete demolition and removal, providing a fresh canvas for the construction of the new boardwalk. The scope also includes the partial removal of the cantilevered concrete slab on the north side of the boardwalk and the removal of two existing light poles. The replacement boardwalk will feature new timber piles, girders, framing, and decking, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.
Furthermore, Phase IV encompasses the addition of new amenities, such as a captivating archway sign, railings, perforated metal fencing, bike racks, light poles, and more, contributing to an enhanced and modernized boardwalk experience.
Phase V encompasses the implementation of alternate bid items and involves further improvements to the boardwalk. This phase will address the removal and replacement of existing timber portions of the boardwalk, railings, and lighting, rejuvenating the boardwalk’s appearance and functionality.
Additionally, the existing concrete trolley slabs will be removed, and the concrete substructure will undergo necessary repairs. Existing timber boardwalk outcrops will be reconstructed, and new timber stairs will be installed, further enriching the boardwalk’s accessibility and overall aesthetic appeal. With careful planning and diligent execution, the Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction project is slated to award one contract for the entire undertaking, integrating all phases into a cohesive and unified effort. The anticipated awarding of the contract and the issuance of the Notice to Proceed are scheduled for late August 2023.
However, it is essential to note that on-site construction activities cannot commence until October 2, 2023, to ensure proper preparations and adherence to the project timeline.
The sections in front of Morey’s Piers’s Mariners Pier will continue to be open until they close for their 2023 season.
The project’s completion date, aiming for Substantial Completion, is set for May 3, 2024. This date could be sooner, weather dependent.
The Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction project is not just a construction endeavor; it symbolizes the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing the future.
By rehabilitating and enhancing this iconic landmark, the City of Wildwood reaffirms its dedication to providing residents and visitors with a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience.
Moreover, this revitalization effort will undoubtedly boost the local economy, attracting more tourists and businesses to the area, resulting in increased revenue and employment opportunities.
