Tony, a stalwart figure in our community, hung up his whistle for the last time on December 6, 2023, marking the end of a remarkable 45-year career dedicated to safeguarding the shores of North Wildwood.

Tony’s journey with the Beach Patrol began in 1966, and throughout his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of countless young men and women, transforming them into skilled and professional lifeguards. His unwavering efforts and exceptional leadership directly contributed to the rescue and protection of thousands of lives.

Chief Cavalier was not only a guardian of the shores but also a trailblazer in breaking gender barriers, paving the way for female lifeguards in what was historically an all-male profession. Today, North Wildwood proudly boasts one of the highest percentages of female lifeguards in the country, a testament to Tony’s inclusive and progressive vision.

Chief Cavalier had a deep-rooted love for community events, cherishing moments like the Beshcen-Callahan Races and the Around the Island Row. He found joy in celebrating Christmas in July and the annual lifeguard ball, fostering camaraderie among the patrol members.

For every rookie who passed through the Beach Patrol’s ranks, Tony’s words on the last day of rookie school echoed in their ears: “This will be the best job you’ll ever have.” A sentiment that Tony truly lived by, as evidenced by his 45 years of dedicated service.

Born and raised in North Wildwood, Tony graduated from Wildwood Catholic and served in the U.S Army for two years in Germany during the Vietnam era. His devotion extended beyond the shores, encompassing his 45-year marriage to his wife, Joan.
