North Wildwood Proposes To Temporarily Prohibit Beach Tents
As the summer season approaches, officials in the City of North Wildwood are gearing up to address the challenges posed by limited beach space.
In response to the diminishing availability of dry sand areas, the city has proposed temporary restrictions on various shaded structures commonly used by beachgoers.
The proposed regulations target cabanas, tents, canopies, and similar structures, aiming to alleviate overcrowding issues that have become increasingly prevalent on North Wildwood’s beaches.
In the past, our beaches only saw small tents erected to help shade small babies but over the years the tents have gotten bigger.
Last year some tents on the beaches measured over 12 feet long.
Under the proposed restrictions, only specific types of shaded structures will be permitted, including circular umbrellas with a maximum diameter of 8 feet and a height of 7 feet 6 inches, as well as baby tents measuring 36 inches in height, width, and length.
The need for these restrictions stems from the city’s struggle with limited beach space, exacerbated by the absence of support for a beach replenishment project.
With beachgoers forced to set up in close proximity to one another during peak summer months, the quality of the beach experience has been compromised.

City officials emphasize that these restrictions are temporary and are intended to address the immediate challenges faced by North Wildwood’s beaches in the 2024 summer season.
If significant changes, such as a beach replenishment project or natural accretion, occur, the City Council will reassess the need for these restrictions.
Effective starting May 15, 2024, the proposed restrictions seek to strike a balance between ensuring beachgoers have adequate space to enjoy the city’s amenities while also safeguarding the environment and beach experience for all visitors.
By implementing these measures, North Wildwood aims to enhance the overall beach experience and maintain its status as a premier destination for summer recreation.
As beach season approaches, residents and visitors alike can anticipate a summer of sun, sand, and relaxation, made even more enjoyable by thoughtful measures to manage beach space effectively.
