Northwind Motel in North Wildwood to Transform into A Condotel
The Galioto family, owners of the Northwind Motel in North Wildwood, recently shared the bittersweet news that the 2024 season will be the last under the motel’s current identity.
After two decades of operation, they’ve made the tough decision to convert the Northwind into a condotel, a move that will preserve the property’s charm while offering a fresh new chapter for future visitors.
In their announcement made on Facebook, the Galioto family said, “The past twenty years have seen the development of numerous relationships, but we are eager to embark on a new chapter and create many new memories.”
Though this transition signals the end of an era, the family plans to stay involved, managing daily operations as the motel undergoes complete renovations.
And while you might be screaming, “no more condos,” this is honestly the best outcome because the worst would have been complete demolition.
What is a Condotel?
For those unfamiliar, a condotel is a hybrid concept that blends the benefits of a condominium with the services of a hotel.
Individual units are sold to private owners, who can use them for personal vacation stays or rent them out to guests through the hotel’s management.
This model offers flexibility for owners while ensuring that the property remains accessible to visitors seeking short-term rentals.

Adaptive Reuse Architecture: Preserving History
The North Wind’s transformation into a condotel exemplifies adaptive reuse architecture, a practice that reimagines existing buildings for new purposes instead of tearing them down.
In a town as rich in history as Wildwood, adaptive reuse allows iconic structures like the North Wind Motel to evolve without losing their soul.
The Galioto family’s decision to go this route rather than demolishing the property is a relief for longtime fans of Wildwood’s unique architectural charm.
In the early 2000s, the island experienced a significant loss of its historic Doo-Wop motels, many of which were demolished during the “condo boom.”
These retro motels, with their neon signs and kitschy designs, were replaced by modern condos, forever changing Wildwood’s landscape.
The preservation of the North Wind, even in a new form, ensures that a piece of this mid-century magic remains intact.
The Galioto family addressed the community directly in their post: “We apologize for any inconveniences to anyone who has already made a 2025 reservation. We will keep the North Wind community updated on any news or information regarding our conversion including future reservations.”
The conversion will see the building itself preserved, with renovations set to breathe new life into the guest rooms, bringing them up to date while retaining the essence of the original structure.
While some may feel sadness over the change, the Galioto family is optimistic about the future. “We are excited to see the transformation as all guest rooms undergo complete renovations,” they shared.
Guests who’ve visited for years will see familiar faces behind the counter, as the family intends to stay actively involved in the daily operations of the condotel.
As the Wildwoods continue to evolve, the North Wind Motel’s transformation represents a delicate balance between progress and preservation
By choosing adaptive reuse over demolition, the Galioto family is ensuring that the charm and character of Wildwood’s past continue to be part of its future.
