Phase 6 of Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction Set to Begin Soon
As we settle into fall, it’s time for some major projects in Wildwood, and one of the most anticipated is the next phase of the Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction Project, covering Phases 6
If you’ve missed the updates over the past few off-seasons, the Wildwood Boardwalk has been undergoing a significant transformation.
With the boardwalk wrapping up for the year, sections have been completely refurbished, bringing new life to this iconic attraction.
The Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction is a multi-year effort aimed at upgrading the aging boardwalk to meet modern standards.
Previous phases addressed deteriorating sections, reinforcing the structure with stronger, more durable materials while maintaining the boardwalk’s character.
How the Reconstruction Process Works
Crews follow a detailed, multi-step process to rebuild the boardwalk, replacing aging components while preserving its iconic charm. Here’s an overview of the steps:
- Tearing Up Old Planks & Concrete Tram Pathways
The first step involves removing the old, worn-out wooden planks. Many sections are outdated and need replacing with sturdier materials. Crews dismantle the surface to reveal the support structures below, while the concrete tramcar pathways are removed entirely and won’t be replaced.2. Removing Old Support Beams
Beneath the planks are original support beams, which hold the boardwalk above the sand. These aging beams, weakened by decades of exposure to the elements, are carefully removed in sections along with the old decking. - Preparing New Concrete Pilings
A key part of the upgrade is reinforcing the concrete pilings that support the structure. Over the years, some have sustained damage, so crews will repair cracks and replace any compromised sections. -
Laying New Joists
After the pilings are prepared, new joists—horizontal supports for the decking—are installed. These joists are made from high-grade, pressure-treated wood or composite materials to ensure long-lasting durability. - Installing New Decking
Once the joists are in place, crews will lay fresh decking boards that match the new layout seen in previous phases. The new decking will blend seamlessly with the updated sections of the boardwalk.
Where Will This Work Be Done?
- Phase VI: Spicer Avenue to Montgomery Avenue
On-site construction is scheduled to begin on October 7, 2024, with substantial completion expected by May 9, 2025. The total construction duration is set at 215 days.
As a reminder, these sections of the boardwalk will be closed during construction. The last day you can walk the full boardwalk would be October 6th.
It’s important to note that this project is separate from the Wildwood Boardwalk Expansion project, which is still awaiting approval of its CAFRA application.
