Philadelphia Zoo Announces Bear Country Expansion
The Philadelphia Zoo has unveiled plans for a significant transformation of its popular bear exhibit, now set to become the all-new “Bear Country,” with a projected opening in Spring 2026.
This exciting renovation will not only enhance the guest experience but also improve the care and conservation of the zoo’s bear species. The zoo announced the project today, marking it as one of the largest undertakings in recent years.
Key Highlights of Bear Country:
- Third Habitat Addition: The expansion will introduce a third habitat, providing more space for the bears and supporting the zoo’s ongoing breeding program. This new environment will help the Philadelphia Zoo continue its commitment to conservation and animal welfare.
- Zoo360 Trail: A new, overhead Zoo360 trail will allow the bears to rotate between different exhibits, giving them more freedom to explore while offering guests unique, elevated views of the animals in action.
- Interactive Training Sessions: Visitors will have the chance to watch training sessions between the bears and their keepers, offering an educational and up-close experience that highlights the strong bonds between the animals and their caretakers.
- Glass Viewing Areas: Special glass viewing sections will be added, bringing guests closer than ever to their favorite bears. These spaces will offer a perfect opportunity for families and bear enthusiasts to safely observe these majestic animals in a way they’ve never seen before.
- And Much More: Additional features will be announced as construction progresses, promising even more exciting developments for zoo visitors.
Generous Support for the Project
The $20 million Bear Country project is being funded through a combination of public and private support. A landmark $5 million donation from the W.P. Carey Foundation—whose philanthropic roots trace back to the Philadelphia area—helped spearhead the initiative.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2025, and the zoo will keep the public updated throughout the process.
This transformation promises to not only captivate visitors but also provide a state-of-the-art environment for the zoo’s bears, ensuring their health, happiness, and longevity for generations to come.
