Severe Weather Likely Monday Across South Jersey and the Philadelphia Region

Severe Weather Likely Monday Across South Jersey and the Philadelphia Region

Residents across South Jersey and the greater Philadelphia region should prepare for the potential of severe thunderstorms on Monday afternoon and evening, according to the latest outlook from the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

Forecasters say the primary threat from these storms will be damaging winds, though a few tornadoes are also possible as the system moves through the region.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the area under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 out of 5) for severe weather.

This includes parts of eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and portions of Maryland. Areas closer to the coast in South Jersey, including communities such as Atlantic City, Cape May, and Vineland, are currently under a Slight Risk (Level 2). Coastal sections farther east fall into a Marginal Risk (Level 1) category.

The enhanced risk zone stretches from the Philadelphia metro area southward and westward, where forecasters believe conditions will be most favorable for stronger storms capable of producing widespread wind damage.

Meteorologists say that several ingredients are expected to come together Monday to support severe weather development, including warm temperatures, increasing humidity, and a strong cold front moving through the Mid-Atlantic. These ingredients can create an unstable atmosphere capable of producing powerful thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service, the timing for the strongest storms will likely be Monday afternoon into Monday evening, though exact timing could shift slightly as the system develops.

Dark storm clouds over beach and pier.Damaging wind gusts remain the biggest concern. In some cases, storms could produce gusts exceeding 75 miles per hour, which can bring down trees, power lines, and cause scattered power outages. While tornadoes are not expected to be widespread, the forecast does indicate that a few isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

The Storm Prediction Center notes that when an Enhanced Risk is issued, there is high confidence that severe storms will occur, and some of them may become significant.

Officials recommend residents take a few precautionary steps ahead of the storms. That includes monitoring the latest forecasts, ensuring that phones and weather alert systems are enabled, and having multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
