Swimmer Goes Missing Off Ocean City Beach
With temperatures feeling more like mid-July than mid-May, beaches across the Jersey Shore saw large crowds on Monday. But in Ocean City, what started as a hot beach day quickly turned into a major search operation after a 19-year-old man disappeared in the water.

Swimmer Goes Missing Off Ocean City Beach
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, crews were called to a water rescue around 5:05 p.m. on May 18 after reports of swimmers in distress off the Ocean City beach. Rescue teams were able to pull one person safely from the water, and officials say that individual is alive and speaking with investigators.
However, another swimmer, identified as a 19-year-old man who was reportedly using a boogie board, remains missing.
Officials say the rescued swimmer told authorities that he witnessed the teen lose his footing on the boogie board before disappearing beneath the surface. Tragically, the young man never resurfaced.
The Coast Guard says the teen was believed to be around 200 yards offshore at the time he went missing.
While the beaches may have looked summer-ready, the reality is that most Jersey Shore towns, including Ocean City, do not have lifeguards on duty until Memorial Day weekend. That means anyone entering the ocean right now is doing so without the immediate protection and response teams that are normally stationed on the beach during the summer months.
Early season ocean conditions can also be far more dangerous than many people realize. Water temperatures remain cold, rip currents can develop quickly, and strong currents can pull swimmers farther offshore in a matter of seconds.
It is exactly why officials and beach patrols continue to remind people every year that if you plan on entering the ocean, you should always swim near an active lifeguard stand. Even experienced swimmers can find themselves in trouble unexpectedly.
Monday’s heartbreaking incident is now serving as another reminder of how quickly conditions in the ocean can change.
The Wildwood Video Archive sends its thoughts, prayers, and love to the family and friends of the missing young man as search efforts continue off the coast of Ocean City.
