The Middle Thorofare Bridge Is Now OPEN After Repairs!
In an unexpected turn of events, the Middle Thorofare Bridge has reopened after earlier reports suggested it might be closed for several months.
The bridge, which connects Lower Township’s Diamond Beach to Cape May, officially reopened to vehicular, pedestrian, and bike traffic at 2:00 a.m. on August 21st, 2024, according to a message posted on Facebook by the Cape May County Government.
The bridge had been closed since August 18th, 2024, due to a complete failure of the drive shaft motor responsible for its operation.
In response to this critical issue, the Cape May County Bridge Commission and County officials quickly mobilized teams to source a replacement drive shaft motor. This rare part initially led many to believe the bridge could remain closed for a significant period.
However, as the press release highlights, their teams worked tirelessly, from morning until night, to complete the necessary repairs.
Commissioner Director and Liaison to the Bridge Commission, Leonard Desiderio, expressed his gratitude, stating, “On behalf of the Cape May County Board of County Commissioners, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our County public works, bridge commission staff, and consultant electrical engineers. Their long hours and dedication turned a potential multi-week closure into a near-immediate resolution.”
With the bridge now back in service, all traffic can resume normal use without any restrictions.
The County extends its appreciation to the public for their patience during the closure and is pleased to announce that the Middle Thorofare Bridge is once again fully operational.
Desiderio added, “Under the leadership of our County Administrator and Bridge Commission Director Kevin Lare, our team made what seemed impossible, possible. Their commitment to restoring the bridge to full functionality is truly commendable.”
Looking ahead, visitors can once again travel over the Middle Thorofare Bridge without any issues.
This is a significant win for the small businesses that could have lost revenue during the bridge’s closure.
On Monday, the Wildwood Video Archive flew the Seagull drone over the Middle Thorofare Bridge.
You can watch the drone footage in the video below. Now that the bridge is open, you can skip the doom-and-gloom talk and enjoy the fun drone shots.
Be sure to join us for the Wildwood Video Archive meet and greet at the Doo Wop Experience Museum (across from the Wildwood Convention Center) on Sunday, August 25th, at noon. We will be there celebrating 10 years of the Wildwood Video Archive! Stop by to buy merch or just to say hi! See you there!
