Wildwood Boardwalk Expansion Underway!

Wildwood Boardwalk Expansion Underway!

The long-awaited Wildwood Boardwalk expansion project has officially begun, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing revitalization of one of the Jersey Shore’s most iconic attractions.

This project is different from the Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction project, which aims to refurbish the entire length of the boardwalk in Wildwood. North Wildwood’s project is expected to begin in the fall.

The Wildwood Video Archive first broke the news early last year that the Wildwood Boardwalk would be expanding.

The expansion will add 14 feet to the ocean-facing side, alleviating congestion and improving the overall visitor experience.

Many don’t realize that the Wildwood Boardwalk varies in width. You can see examples of this in our video at the bottom of the article.

The boardwalk from Schellenger Avenue heading North to North Wildwood is approximately 60 feet wide, while south of Schellenger all the way down to Cresse Ave, it narrows to 44 feet.

This may not seem like much of a difference on a hot summer day, but on a crowded summer night, that section becomes very tight, making it difficult for the tramcar to operate.

The Wildwood Boardwalk expansion project runs from Roberts Avenue to Montgomery Avenue and will introduce a host of new features designed to enhance accessibility, safety, and aesthetics.

Crews able to expand the boardwalk by installing new wooden supports just East of the existing structure. Once the supports are in place and cross-braced, the top layer of wood will be installed.

After completion, crews will install updated railings and modern lighting fixtures to improve visibility at night.

At this moment it looks like supports through half of Roberts Ave have been completed.

City officials and business owners alike are optimistic about the expansion, citing its potential to accommodate larger crowds, especially during peak summer events.

If you’re looking to check out the new boardwalk, you may need to wait a bit, as this section—from Spicer Avenue to Montgomery Avenue—remains closed for construction.

Officials have assured residents and visitors that the project is progressing on schedule, with the goal of completing construction before the upcoming summer season.

The Wildwood Video Archive will be sure to include this project in our upcoming Wildwoods construction recap video coming out this week.
