Wildwood Enacts Backpack Ban on Beach and Boardwalk

Wildwood Enacts Backpack Ban on Beach and Boardwalk

In an effort to enhance safety and curb unruly behavior, the city of Wildwood has introduced a new policy banning backpacks on its beach and boardwalk.

The ordinance, passed unanimously by city leaders on Wednesday, June 12th, took effect immediately.

The emergency ordinance prohibits backpacks from being carried on the beaches and boardwalks between the hours of 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.

The city aims to prevent the transport of weapons, and alcohol, and the facilitation of underage drinking through this measure.

There will be certain bags that will be excluded from these rules though.

The ban includes exceptions for baby bags, medical bags, and small purses, ensuring that essential items can still be carried by visitors.

Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. emphasized the necessity of this action during an interview with 6ABC news, stating, “It’s important to let everybody know Wildwood is not going to sit back and let this rowdiness continue.”

This firm stance comes in the wake of a chaotic start to the summer season, where large groups of teens disrupted the peace on the boardwalk over Memorial Day Weekend, leading to a temporary state of emergency and the closure of the boardwalk for several hours.

These issues with young adults have become a problem in the entire state of New Jersey. A team was stabbed in Ocean City while other towns were dealing with young adults being rowdy and starting fights.

The decision to implement a backpack ban follows a similar measure introduced by Ocean City and Sea Isle City last year, reflecting a growing trend among shore towns to take proactive steps in maintaining public order.

Wildwood officials believe that this ban will serve as a deterrent, particularly for teens who might otherwise bring alcohol and weapons into these popular areas.

City leaders have assured residents and visitors that the police department is fully staffed and prepared to enforce the new regulations.

The overarching goal is to create a safer, more enjoyable environment for all who frequent Wildwood’s iconic beach and boardwalk, especially during the busy summer months.

One of those ways that the first responders on the island are keeping ahead of the rowdiness is by monitoring social media.

Just this Wednesday the city of Wildwood announced that they stopped an unsanctioned event from happening on the Beach.

The event, which was spread quickly on social media, advertised a pop-up beach party.

In a post on Facebook, they said “We are working with local and state agencies to promptly shut down this unsanctioned event, if it takes place, and to hold all participants accountable.”

As the season progresses, the impact of this new ban will be closely monitored, with city officials ready to make any necessary adjustments to ensure the continued safety and well-being of the community.
