A proposal for the development of a new motel in the heart of Wildwood, New Jersey has stirred discussions among residents.

The property in question, located at 5200 Ocean Avenue, Wildwood, New Jersey 08260, currently sits as a vacant motel that has been out of operation for several years due to fire damage.

This motel mentioned in the public notice is the Windward Motel. It was roughly two years ago when the Windward Motel caught fire during a rainy and windy day.

The Wildwood Video Archive was on scene to film a seagull video (drone video), which you can watch at the bottom of this article.

Fire departments throughout Cape May County came to the call and were able to get it under control within two hours, saving the motel next door.

Due to the extent of the damage, the building was condemned and has been sitting empty since.

While crews had been inside throwing away and patching up some of the damage, there hadn’t been work on the building.

A for sale sign went up on the property saying, “Opportunity! 23 Unit Motel. 120′ Ocean Ave-X 100 Deep Lot.”

Last Memorial Day weekend public records showed that the motel had been sold to 5200 Ocean LLC for $1,725,000 but then it sat with no movement again, until now.

A plan will be proposed this week to demolish the existing motel and construct a new twenty-four unit motel with modern amenities including a swimming pool and an outdoor café.

The project has generated excitement among Wildwood residents and officials.

Many are thrilled about the prospect of new development, particularly because they prefer not to see condos built in the area.

Additionally, bringing more motel units back into the city is seen as a positive aspect by many.

A public hearing to discuss the application is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 6:00 PM in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room located on the second floor of City Hall, 4400 New Jersey Avenue, Wildwood, New Jersey.
