North Wildwood Beach Erosion 2024 Gotten WORSE?
The past storms that have rolled through the state of New Jersey have not been kind to our beaches in North Wildwood.
With each passing storm, mother nature is slowly eating away at our sand dunes which are eroding away to the point that at some sections, there are no more dunes.
This is an issue that we have written about countless times here at the Wildwood Video Archive.
The last time we did a video on the beach erosion at 12th Street was over two months ago. The WVA decided to stop by again to document the damage caused on the beach, and it is quite noticeable how bad it has gotten.

For those who may not know, the city of North Wildwood had put an emergency request into the state to connect the existing bulkhead located at 12th Street and at 15th Street.
It is the section between 12th and 15th that has seen most of its dunes breached with some sections allowing ocean water to move closer to the street.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection rejected the application saying that there was no imminent risk to life or property near the dune breach.
While the city is appealing this decision, in the meanwhile there isn’t anything that can be done to stop the erosion from happening.

This has now caused multiple sections of the dune to fail.
In surveying the damage the WVA has seen that the erosion has ripped away most of the dune leaving some of the vegetational roots exposed.
Usually, vegetational plants on dunes help to keep the water back but since there is no sand to keep the plants up, they are useless.
One of the bigger problems is located next to the North Wildwood Lifeguard station.
While the city was approved last year to build a bulkhead around the lifeguard Station, they were not approved to build one moving up the side of the station. This is the side that the city wanted to connect to the existing one at 12th Street.
Due to this, the water is now pushing up the side of the bulkhead and inching closer to the unprotected station of the station.
All of this and more can be seen in our North Wildwood Beach Erosion tour video below.
