Beesleys Point Implosion Aftermath – Drone
For decades, an iconic smokestack graced the skyline of the Jersey shore, serving as a landmark to those driving to the shore points south of Ocean City.
This week, the smokestack, once part of the B.L. England Power Plant, came crashing to the ground. With its demolition, a new chapter in the history of this site begins, one filled with ambitious plans for revitalization and a commitment to sustainable energy sources.
Dating back to 1961, the B.L. England Power Plant had been a fixture of the landscape along the Jersey shore. However, it wasn’t until 1986 that the distinctive smokestack was added, making it an even more recognizable part of the shoreline.
The tower had a very unique architecture unlike anything seen at other power plants. Instead of your normal funnel, this one was designed to look like a light house. Something that fit right in at the Jersey Shore since we have many lighthouses that kept our oceans safe.
Prior to the demolition, the Wildwood video Archive filmed a drone video of this tower for historical records. That you can watch by clicking the link below.

Over the years, the power plant played a significant role in providing electricity to the region and employed many local residents. As the years went by, the plant faced challenges, ultimately leading to its closure, with the site remaining vacant for the past few years.
While formal plans have not yet been officially presented, both local township officials and developers share an ambitious vision for the future of the former power plant site. Their aspirations go beyond the removal of the smokestack; they aim to transform the area into a vibrant public space, redefining the Jersey shore’s landscape.
The proposed plans include the possibility of a hotel, a picturesque boardwalk, and a marina, all of which would enhance the region’s recreational appeal and boost tourism.
The commitment to sustainability is a central theme in these redevelopment plans. The Jersey shore has been a destination for countless beachgoers and tourists, and the vision for the site aligns with the broader push for environmentally friendly practices.
By incorporating sustainable design and green infrastructure, the developers hope to create a space that benefits both the local community and the environment.
The site will serve as a pivotal connection point for a cable from Orsted’s forthcoming offshore wind farm. This ambitious project will link the sustainable energy generated by the wind farm to the power grid, further underlining the commitment to clean and eco-friendly power generation in the area.
The Wildwood Video Archive visited the construction site a few hours after the implosion to film the aftermath.
