HELP Cape May Boaters Missing

On Monday morning, the United States Coast Guard was called after two Cape May boaters, Kevin Hyde, and Joe DiTommasso were reported missing.

Hyde and DiTommasso were sailing their boat, Atrevida II, which is a 30-foot Catalina sailboat that left Cape May New Jersey on December 3rd towards the Florida Keys.

This is a trip that usually takes two days on the boat but could take up to four days if they took stops along the way.

After they didn’t arrive on time, the local marina called in for an overdue call. This is when a call is placed to the U.S. Coast Guard after a boat has been missing its arrival time slot by a certain amount of time.

The U.S. Coast Guard jumped into action and radioed to boaters asking if anyone had seen such a vessel on their journey.

One person responded that they may have seen the boat in Morehead City, North Carolina but couldn’t definitely say so.

U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area Command took to Facebook and Twitter to ask the public for help in trying to find the vessel.

The U.S. Coast Guard Facebook post went on to say;

We have a breaking news story and are looking for your help in locating an overdue 30-foot Catalina sailboat with a bluish-purple hull, with a white superstructure, and white sails with two people aboard, Kevin Hyde (64yo) and Joe DiTommasso (76 yo).

The #sailboat was last seen on December 3, 2022, when it departed Oregon Inlet, NC on its way to Jupiter, FL.

Atrevida II may have stopped in Morehead City, North Carolina, but this is not confirmed.

If you or someone you know has any information regarding the missing boater, call the Coast Guard Atlantic Area Command Center at 757-398-6700.

Those who have been in the Morehead City, NC area have noticed U.S. Coast Guard Dolphin helicopters fly up and down the coast looking for the boat.

A boat of that color is a bit hard to spot since its hull matches the color of the ocean. They are hoping they are sailing with both of their white sails out.

As of 3:30 pm on December 13th, the Coast Guard extended their search range to include back up to New Jersey.

Please keep your eyes open if you are at any shore town from New Jersey to Florida.
