Judge Blocks Withdrawal from Wildwoods Dune Project

A major legal development has impacted the Wildwoods Shore Protection Project, a $54 million federally and state-funded initiative designed to provide engineered beaches and dunes to protect against coastal erosion and storm risks.

Previously, the project was at risk of being canceled due to opposition from some municipalities, specifically the Borough of Wildwood Crest and the City of Wildwood. Their concerns centered around how sand would be distributed and how the project might impact local tourism, events, and beach aesthetics.

However, in a significant turn of events,  The City of North Wildwood obtained a temporary restraining order against the Borough of Wildwood Crest, blocking their withdrawal.

This legal move ensures that all municipalities involved—North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and Lower Township—must remain committed to the initiative, allowing it to move forward as originally planned.

The restraining order comes as a relief to many officials and environmental advocates who view the project as essential for long-term coastal resilience.

Experts emphasize that engineered dunes play a crucial role in preventing flooding, mitigating storm damage, and reducing beach erosion over time.
