Southwest Airlines has officially rolled out its brand-new “Independence One” aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 designed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. This isn’t a simple repaint either. This is a brand-new aircraft, registered N1776R, with the tail number itself paying tribute to the year America was founded.

The jet entered service today April 29, 2026.  Its first passenger flight took off Wednesday from Dallas Love Field and landed at Philadelphia International Airport, a very intentional choice considering Philadelphia’s role as the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence.

And Philadelphia made sure the arrival felt like a big moment.

As the aircraft taxied to the gate, it was greeted with a full water cannon salute from the Philadelphia International Airport Fire Department, a traditional aviation honor typically reserved for major inaugural flights, retirements, or milestone aircraft.

But the real reason this plane is getting so much attention is the design.

“Independence One” is easily one of the most detailed liveries Southwest has ever created.

The aircraft features a bold red, white, and blue paint scheme, anchored by a massive quill-style “1776” stretched across the fuselage.

Running along the side is the phrase “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” tying directly back to the Declaration of Independence, along with 13 stars representing the original colonies.

Even the engines were customized, featuring circular star patterns inspired by the Betsy Ross flag, which adds another subtle historical nod.

According to long-standing American lore, Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag in 1776 at her upholstery shop here in Philly. The story says she was commissioned by a small group that included George Washington, who allegedly asked her to create a flag with 13 stars representing the original colonies.

This aircraft is part of Southwest’s larger partnership with the America250 initiative, which is organizing events, programs, and national celebrations leading up to the country’s 250th birthday in 2026. As part of that effort, the airline has also committed up to $250,000 in grants to support nonprofit organizations tied to the celebration.

“Independence One” now joins Southwest’s other patriotic aircraft, “Freedom One” and “Liberty One,” but this one is clearly positioned as the centerpiece of the airline’s America250 efforts.

Bottom line, this isn’t just another Southwest plane. It’s a flying tribute to one of the biggest milestones in U.S. history, and it’s expected to be making appearances all across the country in the months ahead.
