Spice Up Your Dessert Game with Old Bay Ice Cream!
Ah, Old Bay seasoning – the beloved spice blend that’s been adding a dash of Chesapeake Bay magic to kitchens and cookouts for decades.
Anyone who is anyone knows that if you are thinking about seafood Old Bay seasoning is the only thing you are putting on them. (well not lobster).
Old Bay is like a time machine for your taste buds, transporting you to sunny days by the shore. Its distinctive blend of herbs and spices – including paprika, mustard, and celery salt – gives dishes that unmistakable kick. It’s not just for seafood, either.
From crab boils to fries, and even popcorn, Old Bay adds a touch of zest that elevates any meal.
In our household, we use Old Bay on everything, Chicken, Shrimp, popcorn, corn, cheese puffs, fries, peanuts, chips and so much more. Since we are putting them on everything we decided to add it to one more thing, ice cream.
Anyone who goes out to dinner, especially at the shore, usually gets ice cream after eating All-You-Can-Eat crabs.
This past week, I wondered why we didn’t just combine these two into one, Old Bay Ice Cream was born!
Last summer we made Pork Roll Ice Cream, which turned out to be very tasty, so we already had the full equipment.
Old Bay ice cream offers a complex flavor profile that starts with the familiar creaminess of traditional ice cream but then surprises with a subtle kick of spice at the end. While you may think this is disgusting, don’t knock it until you try it.
If you’re thinking about crafting your own Old Bay ice cream recipe, here’s a list of the essential ingredients: (plus the ice cream maker)
- 1 package of Nostalgia Premium Vanilla Crème Ice Cream Mix (8 oz)
- 1 tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons of caramel sauce (from a squeeze bottle)
Creating Old Bay Ice Cream is incredibly straightforward.
Here’s a step-by-step guide: Begin by chilling the ice cream canister until it feels cold to the touch. In a mixing bowl, combine Old Bay, milk, heavy cream, and vanilla crème ice cream mix.
Pour the ice cream mixture into the chilled canister, being careful not to fill it more than 2/3 full to accommodate expansion during freezing. Place the canister in the center of your ice cream maker.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for turning on the machine and initiating the churning process. Activate the ice cream maker, and it will simultaneously churn and freeze the mixture.
Churning helps incorporate air into the mixture, yielding a smoother and creamier texture. During the final minutes of churning, add 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce to the mix.
Allow it to churn for another minute, then turn off the machine and transfer the ice cream into a tray.
Drizzle the remaining caramel sauce over the ice cream, and your Old Bay ice cream is ready to be enjoyed. If you make this old bay ice cream recipe and you enjoy it, let us know.
