[NOTE: This is still breaking and this article will be updated with information as it comes forward. This was updated as of 8AM]
In the early hours of Monday, May 27th, the City of Wildwood, New Jersey, found itself in an unprecedented situation as the local authorities declared a state of emergency.
The announcement came just after midnight through a post by the Wildwood Police Department on Facebook, prompting immediate concern and speculation among residents and visitors.
The police department’s initial communication was brief and did not provide specific details about the incident that led to the declaration. However, it emphasized the severity of the situation and the necessity of the measures being taken.
The official statement read:
“Out of an abundance of caution due to emergent conditions that have resulted from civil unrest threatening the public health, safety, and welfare of our residents and visitors alike, the City of Wildwood has declared a state of emergency in order to maintain law and order within our jurisdiction.”
At the time of writing this article, 8 AM, specific details about the nature of the civil unrest and its causes have not been disclosed.
Residents and visitors have been advised to avoid the area and stay tuned for further updates from the authorities.
One eyewitness, Stephanie Holsonback said that she was up on the boardwalk last night and “it was nothing but out of control kids” and when police “issued the curfew kids were just flipping off cops and being destructive.”
Viewing the live stream cameras only indicated that indeed the boardwalk had been evacuated. Sirens had been heard multiple times from midnight until roughly about 1:40 AM.
In a message then posted at 6AM, the police lifted the state of emergency by saying;
“Through the enactment of a state of emergency during the early morning hours of May 27th, which included the closure of the boardwalk, the City of Wildwood was able to effectively address numerous incidents of civil unrest and ensure the safety and welfare of our residents and visitors. While the actions taken by the City and this agency may have caused some inconvenience, these measures were necessary to ensure public safety and maintain law and order within our jurisdiction. As of this time the state of emergency has been rescinded and we thank everyone for their cooperation.”
The state of New Jersey has been plagued this weekend with many acts of violence by teenagers on its boardwalks including stabbings in Ocean City, a false report of gunfire in Seaside Heights, and fighting taking place in other beach towns.
Many are assuming that underage violence was the main issue in last night’s enacting of the state of emergency
