The Original Tram Car Toy
I was doing research on the history of the tram cars in Atlantic City, which you can read by clicking the link below, and stumbled upon something really cool
Atlantic City Once Had Tramcars
As you all may know Wildwood’s famous tram cars are from the 1939 World’s Fair held in New York City. The bus company, Greyhound, was chosen to sponsor a tram to transport people around the fair grounds.
Our Wildwood Tram car is know to be very yellow, but it wasn’t always it’s color. New York State’s colors are a navy blue and a burnt orange/gold. Greyhound decided to go with the state colors for the tram car.
Below you can see a video of the tram with it’s original colors from the 1939 World’s Fair.
To make extra money during the fair Greyhound started selling replica tram cars for children. We happened to be digging through old photos and found these replica tram car. Quite a few of them were online for sale.
They were created by The Arcade Toy Company of Freeport, Illinois and made with cast iron and rubber wheels!
Take a look!
