Why the New Wildwood Sign Was Removed?

Why the New Wildwood Sign Was Removed

If you’ve been keeping up with our Wildwoods construction updates or watched our Wildwood Boardwalk Bike Ride video, you might have noticed a brand-new Wildwoods sign installed on the boardwalk.

However, when many of you went to check out this new addition, it was nowhere to be found. Overnight, it mysteriously disappeared, prompting many messages asking where the sign went.

Let’s take a step back.

The Wildwood Boardwalk Reconstruction Project, specifically phases III, IV, and V, has been one of the most transformative undertakings for the boardwalk.

These phases cover Oak to Spicer and the entirety of Cedar Avenue, each with unique challenges due to the different ways these sections were originally constructed.

The stretch from Oak to Schellenger was refurbished about a decade ago, so only the supports beneath the wooden boards needed inspection or repair.

Meanwhile, the section from Schellenger to Spicer required complete removal and reconstruction, much like Phases I and II. However, the Cedar Avenue portion was the most complex of all.

For this section, the entire boardwalk had to be removed down to the dirt and rebuilt because it wasn’t originally constructed on concrete, unlike the rest of the boardwalk.

Another significant aspect of this phase was the installation of a brand-new Wildwoods sign at the entrance of the Cedar Avenue ramp.

This sign, designed as a surfboard with “Wildwoods” in the center and waves crashing on either side, was an exciting new feature.

Crews had finished the boardwalk and began working on the sign. Footings were set, electrical work was done, and the supports were installed. The sign was lowered into place but, after just a few days, it was removed.

So, what happened?

The company responsible for the boardwalk work is one of the best in the business, and their attention to detail has been evident throughout every phase of the project.

Upon installing the sign, they noticed an issue with the sign panels.

Rather than leave it up with the potential problem, they decided it was best to remove the sign, take it back to the shop, and correct the panels before reinstalling it.

If everything goes according to plan, the sign will be reinstalled in a few weeks, just in time for everyone to enjoy.
