Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski and Wildwood Chief of Police Joe Murphy Announce Initiative to Curb Underage E-Cigarette, Tobacco, and Nicotine Use

In a determined effort to protect the health and well-being of Wildwood’s youth, Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski and Wildwood Chief of Police Joe Murphy have announced a new initiative aimed at reducing underage use of e-cigarettes, tobacco, and nicotine products.

Understanding the Risks

Did you know that underage nicotine use:

  • Has negative physical and mental health impacts on youth: Whether vaped, smoked, or taken orally, nicotine use can significantly affect the physical and mental health of young people.
  • Can have life-long harmful consequences: Early exposure to nicotine increases the risk of substance abuse and addiction in later life.
  • Impairs brain development: The human brain continues to develop until at least the age of 25, and nicotine use can interfere with this critical process.

A Collaborative Effort

In the coming months, the City of Wildwood, in partnership with the Wildwood Police Department and Code Enforcement, will embark on a comprehensive campaign to reeducate and work alongside local tobacco and vape product distributors.

The primary goal is to ensure these businesses are fully aware of the laws regarding the sale of such products to minors.

“Our goal is to protect kids, and we plan to do that in unison with businesses that sell these products,” said Commissioner Mikulski.

This cooperative approach aims to foster a community-wide effort to safeguard the health of Wildwood’s youth.

Action Plan

  • Code Enforcement Outreach: In the coming months, Code Enforcement officers will personally distribute educational materials to businesses selling nicotine products.
  • Online Awareness: The City and Police Department will also disseminate information through their websites and social media platforms to raise public awareness about the dangers of underage nicotine use.
