Wildwood Tramcar 2023 Opening Weekend Announced
As the summer of 2023 approaches, the world-renowned Wildwoods Boardwalk Sightseer Tram Cars are preparing to embark on their 75th consecutive season.
For three-quarters of a century, these electric people-movers have been an integral part of the Wildwoods Boardwalk experience, traversing the two-and-a-half-mile stretch while blaring their iconic warning, “Watch the Tram Cars Please!”
Since their introduction to the boardwalk by local businessman Gilbert Ramagosa on June 11, 1949, the Tram Cars have been transporting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, providing a unique vantage point to take in the sights, sounds, and aromas of the seaside locale.

The Tram Cars are not only a beloved fixture of the boardwalk but also an embodiment of the Wildwoods themselves, representing the essence of the shore town’s charm.
The original Tram Cars were custom-built for the 1939 World’s Fair in Flushing, New York. Today’s versions, as well as the original trams, run on a 2,000-pound electric battery and are environmentally friendly, lasting up to 12 hours on a single charge.
The Wildwoods Boardwalk Special Improvement District Management Corporation (WSID), a private non-profit, currently operates the Tram Cars, continuing the legacy of the beloved people-movers.
“The property and business owners who stepped up to make sure the Tram Cars would continue to serve the Wildwoods Boardwalk are proud that we have been able to keep this tradition rolling on our great Boardwalk,” said Ken Schwartz, President of WSID and a third-generation boardwalk property owner.
As the Tram Cars celebrate their Diamond Jubilee, the WSID has introduced new ticketing options to enhance the visitor experience. A one-way fare costs $5, and an unlimited “Hop On/Hop Off” wristband can be purchased for $13, providing access to Tram Cars until 5 p.m.
Additionally, discounted ticket books and wristbands are available for purchase at six locations along the boardwalk. To facilitate cashless and touchless transactions, the Wildwood Tram Car App is available for download from the Apple App Store or Google Play, with the first ride free when purchasing Tram Car rides with the app.
