Wildwood Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project Update

Wildwood Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project Update

It was on February 28th that The State of New Jersey announced that the new state budget would earmark money to help repair the Wildwood Boardwalk.

This was a promise New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy made to Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron after they both toured the damaged boardwalk back in April 2020. Both had a prior tour of the boardwalk back in 2019 but the 2020 damaged only illustrated how badly the boardwalk needed the money.

A 2019 survey showed that the boardwalk was sound but for it, to last many more decades it would need to be fully replaced.

The estimate of a project this size would cost over $60 Million, though city officials said they could work with a plan that only called for $45 million.

On July 6th Governor Murphy pulled through with his promise and awarded the city of Wildwood $4 million for the Wildwood Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project.

We haven’t heard many details about the project and how that $4 million will be spent until now.

In a public notice posted on August 13th, the city of Wildwood announced that they are applying for an application for a CAFRA Individual Permit.

A CAFRA permit has to be pulled when a project is on a beach or within 0 to 150 feet of the mean on a beach or dune.

Once submitted to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Land Resource Protection, CAFRA permit takes several months to get approval.

These CAFRA reports are the same ones the BG Capital Projects are eating on.

In looking into the application we are able to see what will be done in the project.

The application goes on to say that the city is looking to rehab the Wildwood boardwalk from Oak Avenue to East 26th Avenue.

The rehabilitation would include the concrete structures, the replacement of all timber framing, the replacement of all decking, the replacement of all stairs to the beach, new railings, lights, and construction of ramps to the beach.”

If submitted now we could see some kind of work done on the boardwalk by April 2022, though since it’s so close to the start of the season, we may not see work begin until Fall of 2022.

Tune back later for more details.
