Sea Isle City Passes Summertime Curfew for Minors

Sea Isle City has passed a new ordinance that will have teenagers home early during the summer months.

Last night, Sea Isle City voted to enact a curfew for everyone under the age of 18 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The ordinance reads as follows;

“The city has the interest to promote the safety and well-being of the City’s youngest citizens, persons under eighteen (18) of age, whose inexperience renders them particularly vulnerable to becoming participants in unlawful activities, particularly unlawful drug activities, and to be victimized by older perpetrators of crime,” the ordinance reads.

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian if they are out at that time because the ordinance also makes it “unlawful for any parent or guardian to allow an unaccompanied juvenile to be on any public street or in any public right-of-way during those hours.”

These new curfews will take place from May 15 to Sept. 15. Outside of those dates there is another curfew that lasts from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Those found in violation of the curfew there are consequences.

Violators will get two warnings and will be required to leave the area. If they refuse then the violators will be taken to the police station where their parents or guardians will be called to pick them up.

The minor will not receive a fine or a charge. This does change for the parent or guardian though.

If said parent or guardian allows their children to be out past curfew then the parent or guardian will be fined.

Fines are broken down as follows: $250 to $500 for the first offense, if a second offense takes place within one calendar year of the first, the adult will be fined $500 to $1,000, the third offense within a year will be a fine of $1,000 to $1,500.
