[NOTE: As of 5 am, Ian has been upgraded to a Hurricane]
Currently, Hurricane Ian is sitting south of Cuba but is gearing up to become a strong hurricane.
Hurricane Ian’s Path Could Pass Over New Jersey
Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency prior to landfall for the entire state over the weekend. This allows DeSantis to prepare the National Guard and other emergency measures.
The reason for such a movement is due to the National Hurricane Center research that shows that Ian will rapidly intensify to a category 4 before traveling through the Gulf of Mexico and slamming into the Tallahassee area.
It is predicted that it will downgrade to a category 1 once on land. Another thing to consider is if it will pass through Cuba. If it does it could cause the hurricane to downgrade again causing it to hit Tallahassee lower than a category 4.
Once on land, its path is showing a trend to the north. Most Global + Hurricane Models are showing a strong possibility that Ian, in a post-tropical system, could cause some impact in New Jersey.
The timing has shifted a bit but we could see a potential impact from Friday evening into Saturday. What would come with this impact would vary depending on the path and the strength of the storm.
Historically, having the post-tropical storm on land has created mixed winds. These mixed winds do cause tornados, but until we know the path of the storm this is all guessing.
