As you know, through-out the Wildwoods we have been going through a crazy boom of construction. From new motels to new restaurants, this is the most action we have seen since 2006 during the motel demolition year.
North Wildwood Motel To Become Condos
That year will always be stuck in our mind as we lost so many Doo Wop style motels from The Thunderbird to the Rio Motel.
After that demo year we started to see other trends emerge. In an effort to save some of these Doo Wop style motels the Doo Wop Preservation League was established.
It was their best interest to preserve as much of these motels which helped shaped the history of the island.
For those who don’t know, we have the largest collection of mid-20th century resort architecture aka Doo Doo.
This group was able to help save the buildings from being demolished but it came with a caveat.
While you could save the building you couldn’t tell the owner what to do with the property.
These new owners would take these motels and turn them into condos. There are many example of this all over the island includingplaces like The Lollipop Motel.
The term Condotel emerged as a way to describe a motel that has gone condo. Get it Condo/Motet = Condotel!
In 2020 and 2021 we saw two motels turn into condotels. The Surf Motel and The Singapore motel are currently under renovations and becoming condotels.
In April 2021, the owners of the Harbor Mist Motel filed to turn the existing 24-unit motel into a 12-unit apartment building.
The public notice goes on to say;
“Sunshine Shore Properties, LLC Owner’s Name: Same as Applicant Subject Property Street Address: 511 E. 11th Avenue, North Wildwood, New Jersey 08260 Block/Lot: Block 416, Lot 6 PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the undersigned has made application to the City of North Wildwood Planning Board requesting preliminary and final site plan approval to convert the existing 24-unit motel into a 12-unit apartment building. No expansion of the building is proposed.”
On August 11th, the North Wildwood Planning Board granted final site plan approval for the aforesaid property.
The only change in the final site plan is that the residential apartments dropped from 12 down to 10.
There is no date on when this project would start. We will keep an eye on this one as we do our off-season construction updates.
We reached out to the owners of the Harbor Mist Motel for a comment and haven’t received one.
