Banner Planes Are Illegal In North Wildwood?

Banner Planes Are Illegal In North Wildwood?

When you think about the beach you think of the ocean, hot sun, the Fudgy Wudgy guy, and Banner Planes. Things that are so common today.

But did you know that at one point Banner Planes were banned in North Wildwood and might still be?

When we aren’t filming on the boardwalk we are usually doing research for a video. While investigating another history video on how Wildwood and North Wildwood’s Boardwalk Didn’t Use To Connect, I found this article from the New York Times.

Posted on June 19th, 1954, it says that

“On June 18th North Wildwood City Council voted to ban aircraft pulling advertising signs or banners over the city limits. It also banned boats equipped with loudspeakers of amplifiers used for advertising purposes.”

The exact code 326-8 said “It shall be unlawful for any airplane, helicopter, dirigible or other aircraft to tow or pull aerial advertising signs, banners or free-flying insignia behind said aircraft anywhere within the City limits of the City of North Wildwood, or in the skies above said City limits.”

In looking up other articles it’s clear that North Wildwood residents felt these were annoying and didn’t want to be bothered while on the beach.

I was unable to find out when this changed. For all, we know banner planes are still illegally flying over North Wildwood.

I do see banner planes being mentioned in the 1960s over North Wildwood so maybe they were allowed sometime then?

A deeper dive shows us that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was created in 1958, four years after the law was created.

It wouldn’t be until a few years after that until air space would be regulated with rules by the FAA.

More than likely these rules, since they were a federal rule, would override all and any laws passed by cities.

I think this might be our answer. In the video below we talk more about this.
